coiling is a form of basketry. it's a very simple way of constructing an object, but depending on which materials you use, the possibilities are endless. it's one of the first techniques i learned in the fibre program at ocad, and i find myself coming back to it again and again. i find the repetitive process meditative, and i'm always attracted to a creative process that allows me to develop a relationship with my materials. although you can use a needle when coiling, i tend to just use my hands. it's more fun that way!
for this project, i used some chunky yarn as my base and scraps of linen i saved from a screen printing project. i enjoy how "scrappy" this little basket looks, i think it gives it character and charm. the other day, one of my classmates said that she believes in making everything by hand. she said that anytime you need anything - something for your wardrobe, your house or a gift - you should make it yourself. i decided to take that approach with gifts this year, and here is attempt #1.
